Pakistan domestic cricket A brief history ...

Pentangular Trophy
The Pentangular Trophy is contested between five teams which play each other on a round-robin basis and the team with the highest points is declared the winner. Initially, the Pakistan board decided which five teams would be included in the tournament, but later a qualification system was introduced. On most occasions, the top three teams of the particular season's Patron's Trophy qualified and the other two were the winners and runners-up of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. However, the tournament didn't always have five teams, as the name would suggest. Six teams took part in its second season without changing the title. There were up to ten teams in the late '70s, and the title was changed to the BCCP Invitation Tournament. Pakistan Automobile Corporation (PACO) was the tournament's first sponsor in 1980-81 and the title was changed to the PACO Cup for five seasons. However, the tournament never remained a permanent fixture, with it being discontinued for nearly six years after that. The title reverted to the Pentangular Trophy and made sporadic appearances in the 1990s. It was revived in the 2005-06 season after a gap of nearly ten years.
One-day tournaments
Domestic one-day tournaments in Pakistan have often lacked structure and continuity, with tournaments being launched and discontinued frequently. The premier competition was the Wills Cup, which commenced in 1980-81 as a 45-overs-a-side contest. The Wills Gold Flake League was added in the early 1990s but lasted only five seasons. The advent of ABN -AMRO as a sponsor in 2004-05 was a fillip to domestic cricket in Pakistan, taking over the sponsorship of three limited-overs tournaments - the ABN-AMRO Cup (between regions), Patrons Cup (between departments) and the new Twenty20 tournament. The ABN-AMRO Cup has teams divided into two leagues - Gold and Silver - with a winner emerging from each league. The Patrons Cup is contested between departments.

PCB & RBS announce 20-20 Tournament from October 4 to 8, 2008

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in partnership with The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) announced the holding of the Fourth 20-20 Tournament for Domestic Cricket Season 2007-08. RBS also announced its title sponsorship to the tournament, which furthers RBS’s commitment to cricket and to the tournament.

The RBS 20:20 Tournament will run from 4 - 8 October, 2008 in Lahore. All leading matches of the tournament will be held in the Gaddafi Stadium and will be aired live on Geo Super.

After the formal re-branding of ABN AMRO to RBS on August 1, 2008, RBS has reiterated its firm commitment to continue its domestic cricket sponsorship with Pakistan Cricket Board. The Schedule of the tournament is attached.

Thirteen Regional teams divided into four groups will participate in this tournament. A total of 18 Matches will be played at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, Bagh-i-Jinnah Lahore and LCCA Ground Lahore. Top team from each group will play the semi finals and the winners of semi finals will fight for championship in the final. Champion team of RBS 20-20 Cup 2007-2008 will participate in the Champions League in India in December 2008.

Commenting on the occasion Mr. Shafqat Naghmi, Chief Operating Officer, Pakistan Cricket Board said: "We are delighted to welcome RBS as lead sponsors to the tournament and are very optimistic that with RBS’s global heritage of sports sponsorship and commitment towards Pakistan our partnership towards further developing the game will go a long way. We look forward to further strengthening cricket at the domestic level thus providing more and more players at the grass roots level to have greater exposure and opportunities to perform and qualify for cricket at the International level."

Speaking on the occasion, Shehzad Naqvi, Country Executive of RBS in Pakistan stated: "The sponsorship of 20:20 tournament by RBS clearly highlights our long-term commitment to cricket in Pakistan. RBS Group has a long heritage towards sports sponsorships across the globe and the same spirit will be reflective in our initiatives towards cricket in Pakistan."

"We have planned a considerable level of marketing activities to promote not only the 20:20 tournament but also the wider game to support our sponsorship. This is a mere reflection of our interest to take our commitment to the sport a step further in Pakistan. RBS has been involved with English cricket for more than 25 years - getting involved at the grassroots, as well as sponsoring domestic and international competitions, so this is a natural progression." Mr. Naqvi added.
